D. I. Blokhintsev (1908-1979) was an outstanding physicist renowned for his encyclopedic breadth of interests. He authored numerous monographs and a classic textbook on quantum mechanics, played a pivotal role as the scientific leader in the development of the world’s first nuclear power plant, and was the organizer and first director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna. A Hero of Socialist Labor and recipient of many prestigious Soviet orders, he was also a laureate of the Lenin and State Prizes of the USSR, a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and a member of several foreign academies. The first volume presents a concise account of D. I. Blokhintsev's scientific and public activities, along with an expanded summary of his research, compiled by the author himself. It includes articles on optics, solid-state physics, acoustics, and nuclear energy. Additionally, the book features autobiographical materials, key dates in his life and work, a complete bibliography of his publications, and reminiscences from those fortunate enough to have worked and interacted with Dmitry Ivanovich. This book is aimed at researchers—particularly theoretical physicists, nuclear energy specialists, graduate students, and upper-level university students.
