A classic of French literature of the 20th century, Nobel Prize winner in 1947, Andre Gide (1869–1951) was one of the most popular foreign writers in the Soviet Union in the 20s and 30s. In 1936 he toured our country. The writer outlined his honest and bitter impressions of the first country of socialism, where Stalin’s dictatorship had already triumphed, in the acclaimed book “Return from the USSR.” Since then, the works of Andre Gide have not been republished here.
