As technology developed in the second half of the 20th century, the role of submarines armed with cruise missiles gradually changed. The design has also changed.. Initially, these were ships armed with the first generation of cruise missiles - "aircraft shells" according to the then classification. They were designed to strike the shore and were bulky and clumsy. After the appearance of boats with ballistic missiles, the role of strategic missile carriers to destroy ground objects passed to them, and boats with cruise missiles were reoriented to combat surface ships. Finally, in the 80-90s of the 20th century, low-flying high-precision missiles with a long range and correction of the flight trajectory appeared and submarines armed with them began to be used for strikes on coastal small-sized targets and enemy naval groups.
