This Indian poet was known by many names, such as Aryashura, Matricheta and was a contemporary of King Kanishka of the Kushan dynasty. At first not believing in Buddhism at all, he later became a devoted follower of the Buddha's path, writing many works on various aspects of it. Shakyamuni Buddha lived about four centuries before Ashwagoshi He taught sutras associated with meditative practices to achieve Liberation and Enlightenment and, in the form of the Buddha Vajradhara, Mahamudra and Tantram, consisting of faster, though more dangerous, methods of achieving this latter goal.
