Let me explain briefly how this book was born. It describes two trips that I, my assistant John Hartley and my secretary Anne Peters made to the magical island of Mauritius. There are two reasons for this:. A few years ago, I founded the Jersey Wildlife Foundation to save endangered species from extinction by breeding them in captivity. Our plans are being carried out with great success, but it has become clear to me that such animals are best bred in their homeland. The difficulty here was that most of the countries concerned did not have people trained in the subtle business of animal husbandry. Therefore, the trust has established scholarships for those who want to take a course of study with us, so that later in their homeland they establish breeding of wild animals in captivity .. Since the emblem of our zoo is a dodo, it seemed to us that it was logical to start from Mauritius and accept the first scholarship holder from there. So I went to this state to talk to the local authorities . At the same time, I wanted to see some endangered birds, mammals and reptiles and see if we could somehow help the Mauritians save these species. Here is a list of what came out of it.
