The book (in two volumes) is 'Plutony. Fundamental Problems' is a translation from English of a special issue of the journal Los Alamos Science No26, 2000. The book presents reviews of the study of various properties of plutonium, carried out mainly by leading specialists of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. A feature of the research conducted in recent years is the use of many new experimental physical techniques to obtain information on the fundamental properties of plutonium. To explain the complex properties of plutonium and its alloys, the most modern and quite labor-intensive methods of calculation are involved. There is a huge amount of interesting information on the properties of plutonium, its material science, radiation damage, safe methods of obtaining, behavior in the environment, history. At the same time, the authors, as a rule, do not insist on a single explanation of extremely complex phenomena, but give an overview of different approaches to the problem. The book certainly serves the purpose of transferring the accumulated knowledge to a new generation of plutonium researchers and, as it were, invites them to join this extremely interesting and important work. It will be useful to specialists of Russia: physicists, materials scientists, chemists, technologists, as well as students and graduate students of relevant specialties.
