The poem “Zoya” (1942; USSR State Prize, 1943) is dedicated to the Moscow tenth-grader Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya, who volunteered to join a partisan detachment and was executed by the Nazis in the village of Petrishchevo. The piercing lyricism, the dramatic nature of the author's digressions-monologues, the gentle and courageous image of the young heroine determined the popularity of this work in the 1940-1950s.
