Erskine Caldwell (1903–1983) was born in the town of White Oaks (Georgia) into the family of a Presbyterian minister. Having tried several different professions in his youth, he turned to newspaper work. Since the early 1930s. - professional writer. In his books, Caldwell acts as the greatest expert on the South of the United States, the social life of “poor whites” and blacks. One of the recognized masters of the American short story of the 20th century, Caldwell was in the USSR in the first months of the war with Nazi Germany and responded with a series of essays and the book “All on the road to Smolensk!” The story “Trouble in July” printed 1940
