The first and second editions of the WHO Drinking Water Quality Guidelines have been used by developing and developed countries around the world as a basis for regulation and standard-setting to ensure safe drinking water. They recognized the priority to be given to microbial safety and presented regulatory values for a large number of chemical contaminants. The third edition of the Guide has been substantially updated to take into account changes that have occurred in risk assessment and risk management. It describes the “Basics for Safe Drinking Water” and addresses the roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders, including the complementary role of national regulatory authorities, suppliers, communities and independent “supervisory” institutions. Changes to this edition include a largely expanded guide to microbial safety of drinking water - in particular through comprehensive "water safety plans" linked to a specific system.
