“How I Became an Idiot” is the debut novel by Martin Page, the thirty-year-old ruler of the souls and minds of today’s young Frenchmen. This “journey into stupidity” raises problems common to young intellectuals of his generation who do not know how to fit into a “correct” life. “The mind makes its owner unhappy, lonely and poor,” says the hero of the novel, “while the imitation of the mind brings immortality, replicated on newsprint, and the admiration of the public, which believes everything it reads.”
In one from reviews of Page's book they call it “a manifesto of childish spontaneity and adult cynicism at the same time.” Readers love him for his ease of writing, wit, imagination and ability to “not put on airs” and “not try to look too grown up.”
