The plot is based on a “tiny” episode from the life of the first Tsar of All Rus'. For the author, it was interesting at what point Ivan IV finally turned into the Terrible and prepared the ground for the destruction of what had been painstakingly created in the first period of his reign and before it. Such a turning point symbolic event seems to have been the murder of Metropolitan Philip in 1569. On the cover is the Church of St. Nicholas in Pyzhi (photo by the author).
