The cypherpunk movement, which formed in the early nineties, actively resorted to “cryptographic weapons” in order to provoke social and political changes. The term "cypherpunks" was first used by Jude Millhone (hacker, programmer and editor) as a pun on a group of cryptoanarchists. The heyday of anonymous remailers came in 1997, but movement activists continued to wage crypto wars for Internet freedom. Many of them continue to fight to this day, along with followers of the ideas of cypherpunks of the 2nd and 3rd generations, who significantly transformed the ideals of the 90s. Julian Assange, editor-in-chief and mastermind of the WikiLeaks project, became one of the leaders of the cypherpunk movement in the 1990s, along with Tim May, Eric Hughes and John Gilmore.
