The absolute darkness wore on his nerves, though his internalmap of the cave system was still as reliable as when he'd firstdiscovered it. Now that he couldn't see, hearing and scentseemed to be magnified to compensate: he could hear a faintdripping of water; something that sounded like a distant river;the constant "breathing" sound of the cave; the faint sound ofAncaladar's passage over the stone and the louder sounds ofhis own movements. He could smell wet stone, blood and dampwool, leather and Elven steel and armor-oil, unicorn and horse,and a spicy indefinable scent that he eventually decided mustbe dragon.---------
