An epilogue story to the novel, which was created over twenty-six years and was itself the final part of an even longer project of the writer - the tetralogy “Empire in Four Dimensions”. The meeting of “the last of the catechumens” in the story allows the author to remember the global themes of the transitional time - in order to let them go with a light heart. Without wondering how the post-imperial turmoil of geography and language will be resolved, trusting in love that will keep the world intact, despite the splits and skirmishes in the arrogant community of bipeds. Andrei Bitov, like his heroes, remembered one after another in the author’s conversation with a dying hermit monk, is from a generation to which we are all godchildren. Having created the first epic of Russian ecological postmodernism, what place has the writer left for us in the global landscape of love? The epilogue story closes not only the novel, but also the very time of empires, imperial issues, and the imperial scale of leaders. And by what force the new century will maintain the ecological balance of the world is not clear: after all, the last century of great forces, big questions and titanic people was cut short by the collapse of ties.
