Stefan Yigal Mendel-Enk (b. 1974) seems to become for Swedish Jews what Woody Allen became for American Jews. Her debut novel Three Monkeys (2010) is an irreverent tragicomedy about three generations of a small Jewish community in greater Gothenburg. Old people, afraid of assimilation, complain about the oblivion of the customs of their ancestors, and young people, rapidly adopting the Swedish way of life, are morally deteriorating: they indulge in alcohol, divorce and a Christmas tree.
