Chapter dedicated to Marcel Proust from the book “Epistemology of the Closet.” “Epistemology of the Closet” (1990) is the most famous and influential work of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, one of the largest American feminist researchers, which greatly contributed to strengthening the authority of gay theory and overcoming the dead end of ideological and political pseudo-neutrality in the vast field of the humanities. The book contains both a “theoretical introduction”, the famous “Axiomatics”, which gives the fundamental concept of the intertwining of two different but interconnected perceptions of homo- and heterosexuality, which permeates and largely determines all modern culture, and the “methodological part” , where a masterly literary and cultural analysis of those texts by outstanding authors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, namely Wilde, Nietzsche, Melville, Proust and Henry James, was carried out, which marked the transition to modernity, and also a sample of “contrasting” studies of cultural processes taking place today, against the backdrop of Racine's Esther. The publication is addressed to everyone who is interested in modern feminist and gay theory, as well as literary and cultural criticism in general.
