The notorious Austrian writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch was, in essence, the first who, at the cost of his lifetime fame and posthumous “good name,” pointed out the direct dependence of passion and suffering, pain and pleasure, voluptuousness and cruelty in sexual life, anticipating thereby the discoveries of psychoanalysis and the artistic revelations of decadence. Sacher-Masoch's demonic women consciously or unconsciously preach the aesthetics of pleasure through torment, however, unlike de Sade's heroines, they prefer to be dressed rather than undressed.
