First published in the journal “Bulletin of Europe”, 1885, JSfe 5. During the author’s lifetime, it was reprinted as part of the “Ural Stories”. The manuscript is stored in the Sverdlovsk regional archive. At the end of the manuscript, in the hand of Mamin-Sibiryak, there is an inscription: “December 12, 84 Ekaterinburg.” Printed according to the text: D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak “Ural Stories”, fourth edition, M., 1905, vol. III. The author intended to print essay in "Russian Thought", but the editors rejected it, citing the refusal by the fact that it allegedly did not correspond to the profile of the magazine. In preparation for the third edition of "Ural Stories", the author made changes and reductions to the text. A passage sharply condemning the so-called bourgeois “civilization” has been excluded from the essay. After the words: “A whole cloud of dust hung over the city N, painted with the pink fire of the sunset,” there was: “We came across drunken officials, somewhere harmonicas were playing, in every street there was certainly a porterhouse - this is the only offspring of European civilization that made its way to us in the Urals . Such porterhouses, always equipped with dubious girls as female servants, served as the dirtiest dens, corrupting mainly urban youth. Compared to these lairs, old taverns are almost a gratifying phenomenon.” The story “Parental Blood” evoked a positive assessment by V. G. Korolenko, who noted “The amazing reserve of creative power” of Mamin-Sibiryak and his ability to create living, truthful images, outlined “true and strong”, as if carved from Ural stone. Korolenko contrasted the sobriety and clarity of mind of Mamin-Sibiryak with the “foggy, slushy whining” of bourgeois writers and the subjectivist works of liberal-populist fiction writers. “Mamin the Sibiryak,” wrote Korolenko, “has prolixities and elongations, but never complacent nonsense, and if he paints a picture of how “parental blood” encourages his son to give himself to the service of the “world”, then you relate to this picture, as a gratifying fact, and not as a complacent fabrication" (Letter from V.G. Korolenko to I.G. Ostroumov. "Ogonyok", 1958, No. 7, p. 24).
