Pasha Pasynkov deliberately took all the fire on his plane. The Germans in Gatchina had an anti-aircraft battery behind every bush, and when our planes fell out of the clouds and began to bomb the trains, all these batteries started talking at once. Six trains stood on the tracks; they flew into the air, the plume of smoke was such that it was seen even from Kronstadt. It was necessary to leave immediately, because the German anti-aircraft gunners simply went crazy after such a failure, and many of our planes would not have been able to leave if Pasha Pasynkov, having bombed one of the first, didn’t make an extra circle over Gatchina. While the German anti-aircraft guns were hitting him, our entire squadron went into the clouds. All this, of course, happened much faster than one can tell. Pasynkov’s plane was hit in forty places and stopped obeying the rudders. No matter how hard Pasynkov tried, he could not turn it either right or left, up or down.
