THE GREATEST ADVENTURE in our lives is to learn the art of being happy. This is a full-time job that requires no time, if we are willing to spend five minutes a day for this pursuit… and thereby get the happiness habit. Happiness, like worry, is a habit, just as tying a shoelace or brushing our teeth becomes a habit, for in each instance we work toward a goal and once this goal is firmly fixed in the front part of the brain, called the forebrain, the desire taps another part of the brain that has a tape recorder of our past experiences and calls upon it to do the workand this performance is unconscious. It is apparent then that we can perform constructively or destructively depending on whether our goal, no matter how slight, is worthwhile or not. Once the happiness habit is developed then it automatically becomes a full-time job that requires no time. Can a happiness habit really be developed? The answer is yes, simply because any habit is a matter of personal participation and we do participate personally in worry or in being happy… as we do when we brush our teeth or tie our shoelaces to the point when it becomes second nature.Every industry has its assets and liabilities and it is worthwhile to remember that we, whatever we do to ourselves, are the greatest industry in the world. We, within us, have assets and liabilities, and if we are willing to know ourselves a little better, and that is not difficult, then we will understand what our assets and liabilities are. We will learn to take advantage of our assets and control some of our liabilities, or perhaps stop exaggerating them.Tensions are at a minimum when we are happy. We cannot eliminate tensions altogether, yet wherever possible we must stand up to these tensions and stresses to develop our mental and spiritual muscles, just as in a game an athlete shows his abilities best under stress. We must also remember that we can eliminate the extra unnecessary tensions that we pile on our back yet don’t have…
