Man  has  always  devised  ways  to  occupy  his time  when  he was  not  involved  in the  workof  survival.  Games  have  been  used  for  centuries  for  this  purpose.  This  book  explores  onegroup  of  games  that  have  been  played  for  thousands  of  years  by people  in  all  parts  of theworld.This  group  of  games  is  played  on a specifically  arranged  surface  with  pieces  or  menwhose  powers  of  move  and  capture  are  defined  by  rules.  Such  games  are  called  ‘“‘BoardGames.”  The  surface  of play is known  as  the  “board”  regardless  of what  material  is used.  Inmany  parts  of the  world,  the board  was  marked  or  lined  with  a stick  on  the  ground,  and  anyconvenient  objects  were  used  for  the  playing  pieces.  The  board  games  of  CHESS  andCHECKERS  are  not  included  here  since  much  printed  material  may  be  found  elsewhere.Board  games  which  are  strictly  games  of  chance  are  also  excluded.
