The Union was formed soon after the Zanzibar Revolution which was carried out by the Afro - Shirazi Party on 12th January, 1964. The treaty to unite the two republics was first signed in Zanzibar on 25th April and ratified in Dar- es-Salaam on 26th April, 1964
