This book represents an enormous amount of work on the part of the editor, who also has written three chapters, and the many contributors. Unlike the current anthologies on which most culture and personality courses depend, this volume Contains original articles, many of them planned to complement each other. Articles by sociologists and social psychologists have been included. Though not inclusive, the approach is electric and at times broadly speculative; it is definitely biased in favor of the statistical treatment of traits and the use of psychological instruments. By combining the bibliographies and the detailed materials cited at various points in the discussion, students approaching the field for the first time can get a fair idea of some of the preoccupations of those working in the field in the period after World War II.
