Anderson's tremendous range is on display in the paranormal fantasy "Operation Salamander," which combines college football, werewolves, and magical fire in an action-packed tale; the libertarian "Robin Hood's Barn," which observes mankind's need for new frontiers; "Sam Hall," in which a man destroys a government by inventing a folk hero; "A Tragedy of Errors," the sometimes funny tale of Roan Tom, a gruff pirate space captain; and the Sherlock Holmes pastiche "Eve Times Four." The title story features a live role-playing game among the moons of Saturn. Operation Salamander is fantasy, later incorporated in the classic Operation Chaos (1995). Arsenal Port similarly ended up in the undeservedly forgotten novel The Star Fox (1966). Hiding Place features the inimitable Nicolas van Rijn outwitting aliens with brute sagacity. Supernova is the tale of first-contact with the Merseians, the antagonists of the Terran Empire served by Dominic Flandry, who may appear in a later volume. A dozen other pieces (mostly novellas, a form of which Anderson was the greatest master in the history of sf) offer equally intelligent pleasures, to say nothing of the limericks . . .
