This latest release by American Military Historian Michael Green gives a visual history of Naval Aviation in the USN from its earliest days of primitive land-based Aircraft and Floatplanes, through to todays Naval Force Multiplier - The Carrier Battlegroup. The story of Naval Aviation within the USN really only started to develop after 1922, when the USS Langley entered into service. From her Flight-deck the lessons were painstakingly learned that were to result in the first of the USN Fleet Class Carriers being designed and constructed within that same decade. In concert with all this Naval Work the Aviation Companies set about designing and building Aircraft and Weaponry to equip the soon to be commissioned Carriers, and from these primitive beginnings came the future array of Fighters, Dive-Bombers, Seaplanes and Torpedo Bombers that helped to lay the basis for a revolution in Naval Warfare. By VJ-Day in 1945, after the end of the Second World War, the USN had in service over 40 000 aircraft of all types. In spite of the unquestioned success achieved by Naval Aviators during that war, they were soon faced with another struggle for survival after the belief was expressed during the early stages of the Cold War that they were all now obsolete and unnecessary - any future war, so the thinking went, would now be expected to be one that would only involve Nuclear Weapons making all Conventional Weapons and the Forces using them now an unnecessary expense. Thankfully this was quickly shown to be the fallacy it was by the events of 1951-53, and Naval Aviation has since that time prospered, and despite its detractors, gone onto prove itself useful in any number of conventional conflicts from Korea through to Afghanistan. This work traces Naval Aviation from its humble beginnings through into its once more uncertain future - where stealth and unmanned aircraft and ships will soon vie for control of the worlds oceans and airspace.
