On 7 December 1941 the United States of America was attacked. Six huge Japanese aircraft carriers and numerous supporting vessels had crossed thousands of miles of ocean undetected. Their mission was to strike a devastating blow against the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor.The Japanese Government believed the Americans lacked the stomach for a difficult fight. Hitler estimated that the US wouldn’t pose a serious threat to Nazi Germany for at least twenty years. Both assumptions would prove to be wildly inaccurate. Pearl Harbor was one of the darkest days in American history, but it marks the turning point of World War Two and the beginning of the end for the Axis powers.America would outspend Germany and Japan combined, construct the most powerful navy in the world, build an army some 8 million men strong, and develop a new weapon of unparalleled destructive force.
