Whereas most dragons in Western mythology are usually associated with fire and destruction, Korean dragons in myths usually appear as positive creatures, patronizing ponds and rice fields. They are believed to bring rain to the earth. Korean dragons usually live in rivers, lakes, or deep mountain ponds. Mention of the dragon is found everywhere both in Korean mythology and in Korean art. In politics, the dragon personifies the emperor. In ancient legends, you can often find references to talking dragons, dragons capable of experiencing such complex human feelings as loyalty, kindness and gratitude. This Korean legend talks about the great Deumho, who on his deathbed wished to become “granite Deumho”, whose goal was to protect Korea.
