The article describes the basic principles of the structure of the two most important classes of biopolymers - proteins and nucleic acids, describes the functioning of nucleic acids as carriers of hereditary information in living organisms. The main methodological achievements in chemistry, biochemistry and biotechnology of nucleic acids are outlined and an overview of some new emerging areas of application of this knowledge is given.
